Your Skin Barrier Has a Microbiome. Here's Where Postbiotics in Skincare Fit In

If you have spent any time on skincare content this year, you will have noticed the conversation shift. Less about stripping and resurfacing, more about protecting what is already there. Postbiotics in skincare sit right at the centre of that shift, and they are being framed as the stable, sensible answer to a problem the industry created for itself when it tried to bottle live bacteria. The word now appears on serums, cleansers and a growing pile of microbiome friendly claims, and most of us have absorbed all of that marketing without ever being told what a postbiotic actually is.

So here is the honest version. Postbiotics are real. The science is more interesting than the packaging suggests. And there are some genuine gaps worth knowing about before you rebuild your whole routine around them.

What a postbiotic actually is

The clearest definition comes from the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics, which in 2021 settled on postbiotics as a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and their components that confers a health benefit on the host.

Read that again, because the important word is inanimate. A postbiotic is not alive. It is the useful leftovers: the cell fragments, and the things bacteria produce while they are doing their work.

In practice, when you see a postbiotic on an ingredients list it is usually one of a handful of things:

  • Ferment filtrates. The liquid left after a microorganism has fermented a substrate. Galactomyces, Saccharomyces and Bifida ferment filtrates are commonly cited examples.
  • Bacterial lysates. Bacteria that have been deliberately broken apart so their components can be used.
  • Metabolites. Short chain fatty acids, peptides, enzymes, organic acids and exopolysaccharides produced during fermentation.

If the label reads like a wine list, that is why. Ferment names sound exotic, but they are describing a fairly ordinary industrial process with a very specific output.

How this differs from probiotics and prebiotics

These three words get used interchangeably in marketing and they should not be.

Probiotics are live microorganisms. Prebiotics are ingredients that feed the beneficial microbes already living on your skin, encouraging the helpful ones and limiting the growth of the less helpful ones. Postbiotics are the non living byproducts described above.

Here is the part almost nobody says out loud: genuinely live probiotic skincare is rare, because live bacteria are difficult to keep stable in a cosmetic formula that has to survive a warehouse, a courier van and eighteen months in your bathroom. Most products marketed as probiotic skincare actually contain ferments, lysates or inactive bacterial extracts. Which means a good number of the probiotic products you have already bought were, technically, postbiotic products the whole time.

Why the industry moved this way

The shift was practical before it was scientific.

Because postbiotics are not alive, they do not need to survive the formula. That solves the stability problem in one move. It also simplifies the safety and regulatory picture considerably, which is why postbiotics have become so attractive to formulators. Underneath that, there has been a real change in how the skin microbiome is understood. It has moved from buzzword to a foundational principle in how products are designed, with 2026 formulations built to support the ecosystem living on your skin rather than scrub it away. That reframing is the more meaningful development, and postbiotics are simply the most commercially workable expression of it.

What the evidence actually supports

This is where it gets genuinely encouraging, with caveats attached.

Evidence from randomised controlled trials points to postbiotics improving skin hydration, elasticity and dermal density, while reducing transepidermal water loss and oxidative stress. Transepidermal water loss is the measure of how much moisture escapes through the skin, and it is one of the more useful signals of whether a barrier is doing its job.

The proposed mechanism is where it becomes interesting. Bioactive metabolites including short chain fatty acids, peptides and exopolysaccharides appear to promote ceramide synthesis, antioxidant defence and antimicrobial protection. Ceramides are the lipids that hold your barrier together, so an ingredient that nudges your skin toward making more of its own is doing something structurally different to an ingredient that simply sits on top.

Some specific findings worth knowing:

  • A randomised clinical trial of a Bifidobacterium longum lysate, now classified as a postbiotic, found a significant reduction in skin sensitivity and restored impaired barrier function.
  • Vitreoscilla filiformis lysate preparations have produced statistically significant reductions in SCORAD severity scores in small randomised trials. SCORAD is a clinical scoring system used for eczema severity.
  • Studies on Lactobacillus ferment filtrates suggest increased ceramide production, and Streptococcus thermophilus ferment has also been linked to enhanced ceramide production.

Notice the pattern. The strongest signals cluster around sensitivity, irritation and barrier function, not around wrinkles. Postbiotics are a barrier and comfort story, not a resurfacing one.

Where the evidence runs out

Now the part the product pages leave off.

The ceramide production findings, promising as they are, come largely from skin cell cultures rather than from people. Most of that robust evidence remains in vitro, which means it happened in a lab dish. Cell culture results are a reasonable reason to keep investigating. They are not the same as proof that a serum will do the same thing on your face.

Beyond that, the published reviews flag several honest limitations: limited robust in vivo evidence, regulatory ambiguity, real difficulties in formulation, and inconsistent definitions and marketing claims across the category.

That last one matters most to you as a shopper. Because the definition is applied loosely, "postbiotic" on a label tells you very little about concentration, about which organism it came from, or about whether the specific preparation in that bottle has been studied at all. A ferment filtrate at the bottom of an ingredients list, included so the front of the box can say something, is not the same product as one formulated around a studied lysate.

So treat the word as a starting question rather than an answer. Which postbiotic? How far up the list? What is it actually meant to do here?

The step most people overlook

Here is the part that reframes this whole category. You can layer all the postbiotics you like, but if your cleanser is undoing the work twice a day, you are paying to run in place.

The research on cleansing is clear enough to act on. Alkaline cleansers, roughly pH 9 to 10, raise skin surface pH significantly, interfere with the formation of the acid mantle, and shift the bacterial community away from the commensal acid tolerant species you want to keep. The time course is worth understanding too. A single alkaline cleanse normalises within hours, so one bar of soap at a hotel is not a disaster. But cumulative disruption from twice daily use over years produces measurable changes in both microbiome composition and barrier function. You do not need to replace anything you already like. A few practical notes instead.

Start with subtraction. Before you buy a postbiotic anything, look at what might be causing the disruption. Harsh cleanser, over exfoliating, too many actives layered at once. Removing the aggravator usually beats adding a soother.
